  • Hail Impact Testing

    Hail is an extremely destructive force of nature, especially for aircraft, with impacts occurring at more than 600 mph. NTS performs hail and stone strike testing and high velocity hail strike testing. These tests can be performed using clear ice, stone and aluminum projectiles of up to two inches in diameter, fired at velocities of up to 741 miles per hour(331.4m/sec, 1087.4 f/sec). Typical test programs include aircraft windshields, antennas, radomes, and wheel/brake assemblies. Using a laser equipped system with a high degree of accuracy, repeatable impacts can be performed to within a quarter inch of the desired target. This accuracy allows NTS to test even the smallest of test samples, as well as limit the potential damage area of larger units.

    ROM emulation is a powerful and versatile method of microprocessor testing. ROM emulation has emerged as the technique of choice for microprocessor test and diagnostic applications. A microprocessor-based board is tested by replacing the boot ROMs on the Unit Under Test (UUT) with memory emulation pods. Each pod handles eight bits of the data bus. Processors from 8 to 32 bits can be controlled with one to four pods (even the most advanced CPUs such as the Intel Pentium generally use only an eight-bit boot path). The emulator takes control of the UUT by resetting the processor and, under the test program’s control (monitor program), exercises all functions on the board. Synchronization with the UUT is automatic and requires no additional hardware or connections.

    NTS has a number of facilities capable of conducting dual shaker testing, vibration testing utilizing multiple electrodynamic exciters, for the evaluation of large payloads.Once such example was conducted as part of the test program for NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer or LADEE. NTS worked with NASA’s Ames Research Center for simulated environmental testing of the LADEE observatory which included dual shaker vibration.Vibration testing on the observatory was conducted utilizing the NTS Santa Clarita facilities tandem Ling B-340 electrodynamic exciters. These exciters allow either dual shaker vibration testing, or in the case of the LADEE observatory tests, they minimize the test set-up time. The electrodynamic exciters were staged with one in the thrust axis and the other set-up for lateral axes vibration. This dual shaker set up allowed for a quick transition from one test to the other. During the tests, the vibration test lab was maintained at a class 10,000 cleanliness level.
